CAU – Argentinian steak restaurant
A vibrant, family-friendly restaurant chain specialising in Argentinian style steaks and burgers.
I couldn’t come to a specialist steak restaurant for lunch and have anything other than a steak, especially given that these are top quality, free range, grass fed Aberdeen Angus beef steaks.
Rib-eye steak (260g), Chunky Chips and Blue Cheese Hollandaise sauce
The steak was served up as simply as can be – just a piece of meat on a plain, white plate. But when the steak is this tasty, there’s no need for fancy embellishments.
Cooked perfectly to my medium-rare order, the outside of the steak was nicely seared while the inside was incredibly juicy and succulent. The fat around the outside edge and in the middle of the rib-eye steak was meltingly soft, adding tonnes of flavour, and there was not a single piece of gristle in the whole steak. The meat was so tender that it melted in the mouth – in short, this was one of the best cooked steaks I’ve had in years.
The “chunky chips” made for a great side dish, although I’m not sure I’d call them “chips” technically, as they were essentially more like potato wedges or quartered roast potatoes. Whatever you want to call them, however, they were cooked to perfection (just like the steak); incredibly crispy and golden on the outside, but soft and fluffy on the inside. The chips came served in a paper-lined metal basket on the side, which left the plate clear to showcase the steak.
I had a portion of blue cheese hollandaise sauce to accompany my steak and chips, which came served in a miniature milk churn. I’m a big fan of blue cheese sauces with steak, and this hollandaise spin on a blue cheese sauce was flavoursome but without being overpowering or too sharp.
I washed my lunch down with a very nice bottle of Ceriux Rubia, a craft ale from Rioja, Spain, which was very refreshing without being too gassy.
If you’re going to serve up a single piece of meat on a plate as a meal (side dishes notwithstanding), then you better make sure that the meat is flawless and cooked to perfection. Luckily for CAU, this was quite simply one of the best steaks I’ve had in recent memory, and I can’t wait to go back.
