Oscar winners 2018
So there you have it – despite the momentum arguably being behind Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri going into the ceremony, the big winner on the night was actually The Shape of Water, which took Best Picture, Best Director, Best Production Design and Best Score. But I know the real question on everyone’s lips is – how many of my predictions did I get correct?!
When the smoke cleared I got 8 out of 10 correct, which is the same that I managed last year…
Best picture winner – The Shape of Water
My Prediction – Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
I did say that I thought The Shape of Water might be a dark horse on the night, so do I get some credit for successfully predicting that my prediction might be wrong?!
Best actress winner – Frances McDormand (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri)
My Prediction – Frances McDormand (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri)
With the Oscar win, Frances McDormand secured a clean sweep of the major acting awards.
Best actor winner – Gary Oldman (Darkest Hour)
My Prediction – Gary Oldman (Darkest Hour)
It never really felt like anyone else was realistically in the running…
Best supporting actress winner – Allison Janney (I, Tonya)
My Prediction – Allison Janney (I, Tonya)
As with Frances McDormand, the Oscar win caps off a clean sweep of the major acting awards for Allison Janney.
Best supporting actor winner – Sam Rockwell (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri)
My Prediction – Sam Rockwell (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri)
I’m really happy for Sam Rockwell, as he’s an actor that I’ve loved for years, and who takes on a wide range of interesting projects and genres (and not just limited to “Oscar bait” material).
Best director winner – Guillermo Del Toro (The Shape of Water)
My Prediction – Guillermo Del Toro (The Shape of Water)
Although I thought The Shape of Water would be too “out there” as a genre film to take Best Picture (shows what I know…), I always thought the technical brilliance of Guillermo Del Toro’s direction would get him the personal Oscar.
Best adapted screenplay winner – Call Me By Your Name (James Ivory)
My Prediction – Call Me By Your Name (James Ivory)
Like I said, I would have loved for the Oscar to go to Logan, but the truth is it Call Me By Your Name was always the true frontrunner.
Best original screenplay winner – Get Out (Jordan Peele)
My Prediction – Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (Martin McDonagh)
The second of my two incorrect guesses, and just like I thought The Shape of Water wouldn’t get Best Picture because it was a “fantasy” film, I thought Get Out would be equally (unfairly) overlooked and dismissed as a “horror” film. I’m very glad to see that I was wrong.
Best cinematography winner – Blade Runner 2049 (Roger Deakins)
My Prediction – Blade Runner 2049 (Roger Deakins)
I’m glad to see that it was 14th time lucky for the great Roger Deakins!
Best costume design winner – Phantom Thread (Mark Bridges)
My Prediction – Phantom Thread (Mark Bridges)
Like I said, giving the Oscar to the costume designer in a film about a fashion designer just seemed like the obvious choice…
A quick shout out to Coco which won the Best Animated Feature Film Oscar, and in the more technical award categories, Blade Runner 2049 also picked up its second Oscar for Best Visual Effects. Although it missed out on any of the “main” awards, Dunkirk picked up the awards for Best Film Editing, Best Sound Mixing and Best Sound Editing.
